Lembah Bujang, Malaysia
back: Civilizations Index | One of 50+ archeological sites in the Bujang Valley. |
Dec 29, 2015
Site number 11, near the middle of the map, was the center of much controversy when a land developer bulldozed the site. State officials said at the time they were powerless to prevent construction on privately held land. Later it was disclosed the State had recently sold the land to the developer. Officials said the Archeological Site of Bujang Valley was being submitted for recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sadly, it appears that request has been withdrawn.

Many scholars believe the Bujang Valley is where both Buddhism and the Hindu culture first entered South East Asia. Carbon-14 dating has rendered estimates ranging from the 2nd to 8th century C.E. These cultures flourished, spreading to Java, Sumatra, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Myanmar (using present day geographic terms) for some 600 years.

Most of the structures were built of wood, so primarily foundations are all that remain of these important historical sites. Photos above and to the right are of an area along the main road to Sungai Petani, the main town and train station servicing this region.
Photo of map in museum showing location of Archeological sites in the region. It is believed the Guning Jerai mountain near top of map was used by navigators at sea as a beacon to Lembah Bujang.
"Hindu motifs such as the lotus flower and pyramid are symbols of the secred Mount Meru decorating the stone lintel from India.
